Education in Emergencies with Save the children Foundation
- .BOLIVIA
- Today, Bolivia has the largest proportion of indigenous people in
- Latin America, who make up around two-thirds of the population,
- with 37 official languages and two capital cities (La Paz and Sucre). The country is also among the world’s poorest. Nearly 40% of Bolivia's people live in poverty – and that rate increases dramatically in vulnerable communities. Hunger, chronic malnutrition, natural disasters and lack of education plague many Bolivian children.
- Some are forced to work in order to survive and are at risk of
- violence, exploitation and trafficking. For 39 years, Save the Children has been working in Bolivia to protect the rights of children and immediately achieve positive and transcendental changes in their lives. Our projects and programs focus on five thematic areas:
- Education
- Child Protection
- Health and Nutrition
- Risk Management-Emergencies
- Child Poverty Reduction
During 2023, we were able to reach 122,089 children and adults through our programs.
EDUCATIONEducation represents Bolivia’s largest area of work, where we invest more than 55% of our resources. We work with education authorities at the national level, departmental and municipal governments, decision-makers and hundreds of schools in rural and urban areas, helping to improve educational quality and inclusion and make different learning spaces more friendly, safe, respectful, equitable, free of violence and contextualized.
OUR PROGRAMS
Our programs in Bolivia cover children of all ages, including the most vulnerable and marginalized, from early childhood, childhood, adolescence, and youth. We listen to the needs of these groups and adapt our programs accordingly, applying models of innovation and participation that include not onlychildren, but also parents and educational councils, teachers, education administrators, and other stakeholders.
We have different projects in the area of community education with the themes of the integral development of adolescents and young people, school health and nutrition, menstrual hygiene, healthy recess, recess in movement among other successful actions and initiatives proven throughout our history in Bolivia. WITH YOUR SUPPORT: EDUCATION IN EMERGENCIES Forest fires in Bolivia, particularly in the departments of Santa Cruz and Beni, are severely impacting the education sector. Schools located near the affected areas are at risk from both the fires and harmful smoke, posing serious health risks to students and staff. As a result, classes have been suspended in several municipalities, and in some cases, children have been evacuated. The Ministry ofEducation has responded by moving academic activities online in many regions. In response to this crisis, efforts are being made to strengthen emergency ducation systems and facilitate a Safe Back to School, which is essential for the well-being of children and adolescents.

Education in emergencies provides crucial psychosocial support, helping students cope with the trauma and uncertainty caused by the situation. It also keeps children engaged in learning, reducing the risk of dropouts and fostering resilience in the face of future challenges.
Save the Children in Bolivia works in Education to promote immediate and lasting solutions, including innovative pedagogical methodologies and approaches that create significant improvements in their educational quality at the national, departmental, municipal and community levels. We ensure that interventions are documented with visible and verifiable performance results, and support quality andimpact evaluations so that our work contributes to the country's evidence and contributes to global evidence on how to achieve important educational changes for children. We work in six of the nine departments in Bolivia, thus reaching more than 30 municipalities.

Education in emergencies provides crucial psychosocial support, helping students cope with thetrauma and uncertainty caused by the situation. It also keeps children engaged in learning, reducingthe risk of dropouts and fostering resilience in the face of future challenges. To address the key challenges, the response focuses on providing educational kits, hygiene kits, and portable water filters. Portable water filters will be installed in the most affected schools, ensuring children have access to clean drinking water. Hygiene kits, which include masks, will protect students from inhaling harmful smoke and reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. Educational kits will support students in reintegrating into the learning process, promoting equity in education. These interventions aim to protect both the physical health of students and create an environment that enables continuous learning.
This comprehensive approach not only safeguards students’ health but also ensures they can continue their education during this emergency.
